McNaught Home Restoration Project
The McNaught Homestead Restoration Project is a dedicated effort to preserve the significant legacy of the site, which was designated a Provincial Historical Resource on July 23, 2003. Located south of Beaverlodge, Alberta, this homestead is particularly notable for its direct association with the acclaimed artist, Euphemia McNaught. Overseen by the McNaught Homestead Preservation Society, the project has twin objectives: to serve as an inspiring space for artists and the public, and to meticulously restore the historical integrity of the property. This includes developing educational programs, festivals, and an artists' retreat to honor McNaught's artistic contributions.
A major focus of the restoration involves returning the designated historic buildings—an excellent collection of early 1900s pioneer structures—as close as possible to their original appearance and function, allowing the public a glimpse into pioneer life. Beyond the structures, the project is working to preserve the gardens, fences, farmland, and natural habitats, including establishing a Boardwalk and viewing area near McNaught Lake. This provides access for nature and art lovers to appreciate the scenic features and resident birdlife, such as Trumpeter swans. Through these efforts, the McNaught Homestead is being brought back to life, blending historical preservation with artistic inspiration and natural appreciation.
